My understanding of literacy is very similar to that of media literacy. I believe literacy is the ability to read, write, analyze any create any form of text. Texts may include, but not be limited to, words, drawings, music, sculptures, paintings and so forth. To be literate means a person also has the ability to think critically about the text they are deciphering in order to find within it the full meaning intended by the author. As stated in the article, simply put, “media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms.” As we step into the 21st century, educators are presented with the challenge to ensure their students are properly prepared for life in today’s world. The quickly advancing area of technology has allowed for a vast infusion of media into our everyday lives. Students must learn the full ramifications of the use of technology and media. Being media literate, then, involves not only the ability to read and create media. I agree with the article that being media literate also involves “the ability to access analyze, evaluate and create messages in a variety of forms – from print to video to the internet.” It is up to us as educators to ensure students learn to be critically literate with regards to media so that they are more fully prepared to deal with life in today’s media filled world.
